Indonesian online shoppers greatly prefer the convenience of e-commerce. Tokopedia was the most visited site during Q1 2021 with 135 m clicks, with Shopee and Bukalapak coming in second and third.

Indonesian e-commerce expanded rapidly during 2020 to make up 20% of all retail sales in the country. A huge increase since, in 2016 e-commerce made up 2% of all sales. This makes Indonesia one of the top four countries for retail e-commerce retail share.

Two of Indonesia’s biggest start-ups, Gojuk and Tokopedia, merged to become Go To Group in May 2021. This would allow the new company to grab an even bigger share of the e-commerce scene as it encompasses ride sharing, food delivery, payments and e-commerce.

Indonesia’s economy dropped by 2.1% in 2020 but is forecast to grow by 4.3% in 2021 and 5.8% in 2022 according to the IMF. Inflation rose in 2020 by 2% and is expected to rise at 2% in 2021 and 3.1% in 2022.
