Latin American e-Commerce has experienced substantial growth and generates every year between 60 billion and 70 billion dollars (more than 132 billion Brazilian reais). Main part of this amount is dedicated to the purchase of electrical appliance, most relevant category, and transnational operations, stated a market specialist. “Electronic commerce is more mature in countries like Chile and especially Brazil, which is the transaction leader in the region. However, Mexican e-Commerce market is still crawling and there is much room for expansion in the country and in the rest of the region”, explained Ian Cox, executive of PayPal Latin America.
A main feature of Latin American electronic market observed by PayPal since its entry in the region is the need to adapt payments and offer instalments, very common and relevant in countries like Mexico and Brazil. Instalments allow consumers to spread their purchases over an agreed period of time – for example, in 12 instalments. “As we don’t offer this service in the United States, we needed to change our product of make it available in Latin America”, commented Cox.
