Cybercrime caused losses of US$ 113 billion for internet users worldwide last year. In Brazil, the loss accounted for US$ 8 billion. The trend is worsening in the upcoming years, with the advancement of large scale attacks on the international computer networks. These are some of the conclusions of the Cyber Security Trends Report, conducted by Symantec in partnership with the Organization of American States (OAS).

According to the survey, 552 million worldwide internet users had their data violated by cybercriminals last year. The list of stolen information includes credit card data, identity, address, telephone number, emails, passwords and medical records.

As Cheri McGuire, Symantec’s vice president of Global Government Affairs & Cybersecurity Policy, presents, although there are no statistics about company losses and the data presented refer only to consumers with credit cards that have been cloned, attacks on companies and governments advance and cause increasingly bigger damages. The survey indicates that there were globally 253 large data leaks last year, which represented a growth of 62% of this type of attack in relation to 2012.

Brazil, Colombia and Argentina were the main attack sources by email in Latin America, responding for 74% of the cases in the region and for 3.2% in the world. According to the survey, attack attempts to all the companies that sponsor the World Cup have already been identified.

Ms. McGuire highlighted that, despite the negative scenario, Latin American governments – including Brazilian one – strengthened their security politics in order to reduce losses risk and data theft.
