Mobile Commerce Growing Globally

Global mobile commerce is on the rise says a new report from Internet Retailer.

Entitled Mobile 500, the report shows that the largest 500 e-retailers will grow mobile sales (via smartphones and tablets) by 68% in 2015.

Most of these sales will take place in America, but much of the growth is happening globally.

The report shows that this year in the US alone, the largest 378 mobile merchants will grow sales, generated by smartphones and tablets, by 36%, creating total revenues of $88.4 billion. This is twice the growth achieved in the first quarter of the year.

But as the report concludes, the US do not have it all to themselves. The bulk of the mobile commerce growth is coming from Latin America, China and Europe. Of the 114 merchants in these regions which make up the Mobile 500, these will grow mobile commerce by 144.6% ($66.4 billion).

Latin America and Europe are also out-pacing the US in terms of mobile commerce. Seven merchants based in Brazil, Chile and Mexico are this year set to increase mobile revenues by nearly 60%, some $1.4 billion.

The report highlights the fact that eBay figures are not included in the Mobile 500 calculations, because it is regarded as selling other people’s goods, not their own. If they are included in the figures, then a further $15.3 billion sales are added and altogether, mobile commerce will account for nearly 30% of the e-Commerce market in the US, up from 25% last year.
