Streamlining iGaming payments with Bancontact WIP

Setting the scene
The France-based payment service provider (PSP) serves merchants across Europe, but has a strong presence in Belgium. With many of its clients in digital services or iGaming, it uses PPRO to offer Bancontact and deliver faster, more flexible payment experiences.
Bancontact is Belgium’s leading domestic payment method, enabling secure, real-time payments directly from consumers’ bank accounts. With around 18 million cards in circulation across a population of 12 million, its reach is unmatched. Bancontact Wallet Initiated Payments (WIP) support recurring transactions, including one-click checkout and subscription models.

The PSP’s challenge
The European iGaming market is forecast to reach $66.8 billion by 2029, up 56% from 2023. But big potential comes with big competition.
To stay ahead, merchants need seamless user experiences and high conversion rates, and they rely on their payment partner to help deliver both.
Our client needed a way to reduce payment friction, speed up the payment journey, and help merchants drive conversion.

The solution
We gave the PSP the ability to offer one-click payments through Bancontact WIP: a sub-product of the Bancontact scheme they were already using.
Bancontact WIP allows merchants to securely store a consumer’s card as a token, removing the need to re-enter payment details for future transactions. It’s a cutting-edge, one-click wallet solution that simplifies payments and gives users a faster, frictionless experience. For merchants, this frictionless payment experience reduces payment abandonment and boosts conversion.
With 27% of Belgian consumers using digital payment solutions for online purchases, Bancontact WIP helps merchants meet demand for faster, simpler ways to pay.

The implementation
The PSP’s rollout of Bancontact WIP began with an initial pilot involving iGaming merchants in January 2025. All merchants using WIP through the PSP are fully licensed and regulated in line with PPRO’s commitment to ensuring local legal and regulatory compliance.
We handled all the technical heavy lifting, taking care of the integration and maintenance, and worked with Bancontact WIP to process various payment flows, from recurring payments to refunds. This ensured merchants could easily use innovative WIP technology without having to heap on additional resources or disrupt day-to-day operations.

The results
The results from the pilot speak for themselves:
- Conversion rates increased to 90.33%, up from 87.16% with standard Bancontact payments. By comparison, standard Bancontact via other PSPs averages 83.80%, highlighting WIP’s strong performance.
- For all participating merchants, average transaction counts increased after adopting Bancontact WIP, with a mean uplift of 24%.
- Players quickly embraced the new payment method, resulting in increased engagement, longer customer lifecycles and more satisfied users.
Following the successful pilot, a growing number of the PSP’s merchants are using Bancontact WIP through PPRO, with more to follow soon.

Future potential
One-click payments aren’t the only thing Bancontact WIP
can do.
Another key use case is its ability to enable recurring payments – crucial for merchants who want to use a subscription model, for example. WIP allows a merchant to take repeat payments without getting the customer to reauthorise each time.
Recurring payments open up a host of opportunities for PSPs and their merchants by allowing consumers to pay for further services without lifting a finger. This demonstrates the value of WIP across verticals and its potential for wider adoption.
