According to data released by the Brazilian Central Bank, credit and debit cards transactions volume in Brazil grew 210% in seven years. The volume increased from R$ 265.9 billion (US$ 119.9 billion) to R$ 826.9 billion (US$ 373 billion) between 2007 and 2013 – R$ 534 billion (US$ 240.9 billion) on credit cards and R$ 293 billion (US$ 132.2 billion) on debit cards, which means a growth of, respectively, 14.7% and 23.4% over the previous year.

Additional important data presented by the Central Bank of Brazil is that the percentage of transactions with magnetic stripe cards dropped by half in 2013, from 20.6% to 10.2%. In 2007, it was over 88%. “The stripe has been replaced by the chip, much safer. As non face-to-face transactions are also growing – almost doubled in seven years, and in one year went from 7.3% to 8.1% of the total – is now a need to take extra care of electronic fraud”, points out Boanerges Ramos Freire, president of Boanerges & Cia.

The percentage of activated credit cards is has also declined over the past years – 47.9% in the last quarter of 2013 versus 56.6% in the same period of 2007. In total 182.4 million plastic credit cards were issued between September and December last year. Debit cards scenario is different – in seven years the percentage of activated cards moved from 25.7% to 36.5%.

Considering the amount of transactions, checks volume dropped from 2 billion to 1.3 billion in seven years – while debit cards increased from 1.7 billion to 4.9 billion and credit cards from 2.2 billion to 5 billion. Regarding transactions volume, the situation is different: checks were still responsible for R$ 2.9 trillion (US$ 1.3 trillion) in 2013, compared to R$ 2.2 trillion (US$ 1 trillion) in 2007, while debit cards transacted R$ 293 billion (US$ 132.2 billion) and credit, R$ 534 billion (US$ 240.9 billion) .
