The number of Dutch consumers rose in 2020 by 2% taking the figure to 13.8 m online shoppers. They made an average of 24 purchases in the year, an increase of 27%, taking the amount spent on e-commerce to 32.5 bn $US.

The Dutch e-commerce market is dominated by retailers from the Netherlands with the transglobal giants such as Amazon not getting much of a look in. Out of the top ten retailers, only two are from outside the Netherlands.

The Netherland’s economy dropped by 3.8% in 2020 but is forecast to grow by 3.5% in 2021 and 3% in 2022 according to the IMF. Inflation also rose in 2020 by 1.1% and is expected to rise by 1.4% in 2021 and by 1.5% in 2022.
