Internet companies active in Brazil have increased their revenues by 50% to R $ 144.7bn between 2012 and 2014.

They also increased their number of employees by 17.5%, creating over 51,000 new jobs. They also expanded their businesses by over 27% and the sector now ranks 14th in terms of federal tax collection.

The latest figures come from a major survey commissioned by Abranet, the Brazilian Institute of Planning and Taxation (BIPT).

The findings have just been presented at the opening of the 1st Conference Abranet – entitled ‘Challenges and Opportunities for Internet Companies’ – which was held in São Paulo between 13 and 14 May.

The registered sales recorded by internet companies increased from R $ 96.4 billion in 2012 and R $ 113.07 billion in 2013 to R $ 144.7 billion in 2014. As a percentage of all the revenues of Brazilian companies, this equated to a 1.74% share.

President of the High Council and BIPT studies coordinator Gilberto Luiz do Amaral said: “It is in two years as high billing increase. I venture to say that in five years, companies of CNAEs surveyed will be even more representative, ranking 5th in revenue and tax collection. And in ten years the Internet sector will be the largest collection of taxes.”

It was also revealed that the sector is made up of a large number of small and medium sized companies. Only just over 2% of the companies had a turnover of more than $48m annually.
