Case study
Streamlining iGaming payments with Bancontact WIP
A leading French PSP came to us with a pressing challenge: How could they help their iGaming clients stand out in a fiercely competitive arena without making big changes? The solution was to enable one-click, wallet-based payments that boost conversion rates to over 90% and give merchants a competitive edge.
Setting the scene
The France-based Payment Service Provider has customers across a number of European markets and a strong presence in Belgium. Their mission is to help merchants make payment journeys faster, more flexible, and adaptable. A large proportion of their client base is in digital services and iGaming, and through PPRO, they’ve been able to offer Bancontact as a payment option to their customers.
Bancontact is Belgium’s leading domestic payment method, offering secure, real-time debit payments directly from consumers’ bank accounts. With approximately 18 million Bancontact cards in circulation for a national population of around 12 million, Bancontact’s reach is unparalleled. Bancontact Wallet Initiated Payments (WIP) allow recurring transactions with Bancontact cards, enabling one-click payments and subscription models with a seamless user experience.
The PSP’s challenge
iGaming is a rapidly growing industry. By 2029, the European iGaming market is expected to reach $66.8 billion in gross revenue – a 56% increase from 2023. But big potential comes with big competition.
iGaming is a fiercely competitive space, and those operating within it need to be constantly thinking of ways to improve the user experience and maintain high conversion rates. This is a shared challenge: iGaming merchants expect their payment partners to keep them ahead of their peers.
One way to address both user experience and conversion is through streamlining payments, making them faster for users and reducing points of friction. Our client needed to give their merchants the tools to offer seamless payments to their users.
The solution
Our solution was to give the PSP the ability to offer one-click payments. To enable this, we worked with them to implement Bancontact WIP: a sub-product of the Bancontact scheme they were already using.
Bancontact WIP allows merchants to store a consumer’s card on file, as a secure token, so future payments don’t require consumers to continuously re-enter their details. It’s a cutting-edge, one-click wallet solution that simplifies payments and gives users a faster, frictionless experience. WIP delivers substantial benefits to merchants too: with one-click payments, customers can skip laborious data entry, reducing payment abandonment and increasing conversion.
The appetite for easy online payments is clear. According to the European Central Bank’s SPACE study, Belgian consumers use e-payment solutions (including payment wallets, PayPal, and other mobile apps) for 27% of online payments. There’s a demand for effortless payments, and Bancontact WIP helps meet it.
The implementation
The PSP’s rollout of Bancontact WIP began with an initial pilot involving iGaming merchants in January 2025. All merchants using WIP through the PSP are fully licensed and regulated in line with PPRO’s commitment to ensuring local legal and regulatory compliance.
We handled all the technical heavy lifting, taking care of the integration and maintenance, and worked with Bancontact WIP to process various payment flows, from recurring payments to refunds. This ensured merchants could easily use innovative WIP technology without having to heap on additional resources or disrupt day-to-day operations.
The results
The results from the pilot speak for themselves:
- iGaming merchants using Bancontact WIP, enabled by PPRO, saw their conversion rates rise to 90.33%, up from 87.16% with standard Bancontact payments. By comparison, standard Bancontact payments with other PSPs average around 83.80%, underscoring the strong performance of WIP.
- The impact has gone beyond conversion rates. Across all participating merchants, average transaction counts increased after adopting Bancontact WIP, with a mean uplift of 24%.
- Players have been quick to embrace the new payments system, with merchants noting a shift among their users towards the new WIP and away from traditional card-based payments. The outcome: increased engagement, longer customer lifecycles and more satisfied users.
Following the successful pilot, a growing number of the PSP’s merchants are using Bancontact WIP through PPRO, with more to follow soon. This strong merchant adoption demonstrates market demand for payment solutions that simplify transactions.
Future potential
One-click payments aren’t the only thing Bancontact WIP can do.
Another key use case is its ability to enable recurring payments – crucial for merchants who want to use a subscription model, for example. WIP allows a merchant to make future payments without getting the customer to reauthorise repeat payments.
Recurring payments open up a host of opportunities for PSPs and their merchants by allowing consumers to pay for further services without lifting a finger. This capability means WIP can offer great value across verticals, and there’s potential for future widespread adoption.
Keep the thrill of the game going with seamless payments. Together with our long-term partner, PPRO is setting a new standard and giving merchants and consumers the streamlined payments they want. The impressive results with Bancontact WIP clearly show the power of wallet-based payments.
