Smartphone Users To Double By 2020

23.06.2015

A new study just published reveals that Smartphone subscriptions in Latin America and the Caribbean are expected to more than double by 2020

This equates to a total of 603 million smartphone users, or nearly 90% of the population of the two regions. Over 300 million subscriptions will be added between 2014 and 2020. What’s more, the total number of mobile subscriptions will rise from 745 million in 2014 to 824 million in 2020.

The estimates come from the latest Mobility Report by Ericsson.

Technology will also keep pace, with the regions moving from mostly GSM/EDGE-only markets to WCDMA/GSM and LTE by 2020. It’s estimated that the share of 3G and 4G subscriptions will rise from 40% in 2014 to 90% in 2020.

The study concludes that as the rise of the smartphone appears unstoppable, this will lead to an equally fast rise in the use of data. The Ericsson report predicts that by 2020, smartphone data will have risen seven times. What’s more, by the same date average monthly smartphone data will have increased from 0.8GB in 2014 to 3.0GB. Much of the growth will be driven by the use of mobile video applications and the report goes on to say that traffic of this kind will have grown by over 50% by 2020. Video will by then account for 60% of all data traffic.
