By the end of the decade, the number of smartphone users in LATAM will have reached 245.6m.

New figures from eMarketer show that the number of smartphone users is growing rapidly throughout the region. This year there are 155.9 million users, so the increase by 2019 equates to a 22.2% year-over-year improvement.

The figures also show that although LATAM is made up of over 40 individual countries, the growth in smartphone use is being driven in just six territories. And these six account for almost 85% of smartphone use.

The countries are Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru. Interestingly, by 2019 their domination of the user base will stay roughly consistent, only dropping marginally to 83.1%.

eMarketer point out that its unsurprising that these six countries account for such a large proportion of smartphone users, especially since they make-up around 75% of the region’s population and 85% of GDP.

Of the six dominant countries, the two with the biggest populations – Brazil and Mexico – have the most smartphone users – with Columbia third. Brazil currently boasts 49.1 million users, Mexico 38.5 million and Colombia 16.7 million.
