In 2020 more than 2.17 m people shopped online, and 305, 000 for the first time. The age group that saw the biggest growth was the over 60s, with a 30% rise in spending.

10% of New Zealand shoppers are referred to as Super Shoppers – they make on average 50 purchases a year, and make up 42% of all online retail transactions. In 2020 the number of Super Shoppers rose to 28% with an average annual online spend of 8,946 NZD.

Buy now, pay later methods have been expanding for the past few years. In 2019 it grew by 105% and in 2020 continued to grow by a further 57%. Not only are more people using the payment method more, they are also spending more – up 10%.

New Zealand’s economy dropped by 3% in 2020 but is forecast to grow by 1.8% in 2021 and 3.2% in 2022 according to the IMF. Inflation rose slightly in 2020 by 1.7% and is expected to rise by 1.8% in 2021 and 1.6% in 2022.
