The growing popularity of Fawry, a local Egyptian payment method, which in 2020 became Egypt’s first tech unicorn, has allowed the financially excluded to make online transactions more easily.

72% of Egyptian consumers are shopping more online and using more Facebook (83%) and Instagram (43%) compared to pre-pandemic times to find new sellers and more information about the products they are buying.

The pandemic changed the demographic who most regularly shopped online. Prior to the pandemic, most e-commerce consumers were young and tech literate, now more middle aged shoppers have made their way online.

Egypt’s economy is set to grow by 2.5% in 2021 according to the IMF, and 5.7% in 2022. Meanwhile inflation is set to drop from 5.7% in 2020 to 4.8% in 2021 but rise again to 7.2% in 2022.
