EzyPesa

EzyPesa is a mobile money service in Tanzania, operated by the telecoms company Zantel. It enables customers to send, receive, deposit, withdraw, make payments and pay bills using electronic cash stored in their EzyPesa mobile accounts. Customers don’t need to have a bank account. They simply top up their EzyPesa account at any participating convenience store.
Other e-wallet services operating in Tanzania include Airtel Money, PaySera and Allied Wallet.
The benefits of supporting e-wallets in Tanzania
- Under half of the adult population has a bank account and just 1% has a credit card (PPRO), making support for alternative payment methods a must.
- Over half of Tanzanian consumers use an e-wallet or mobile money account, up 41% since 2018 (TanzaniaInvest).
- Tanzania has the fourth-largest e-commerce market in Sub-Saharan Africa (Lloyds Bank), making this a highly attractive market for merchants looking to expand.
