Boleto Bancário

Boleto (meaning »«ticket«) Bancário is an official Brazilian payment method, which is regulated by the Central Bank of Brazil. It is a push payment system which was launched in 1993 and today generates 3.7 bn transactions per year.

In Brazil, where over two-thirds of its 200 m population do not have a credit card, Boleto Bancário is highly popular, generating 3.7 bn transactions per year. Local and regional merchants often offer discounts for Boleto Bancário payments as there is no chargeback risk, and payments are made upfront. After selecting goods or services, consumers reach the merchant’s checkout site. The consumer selects Boleto Bancário. The merchant site generates the billing details as a print-optimised document. The customer can then pay at ATM, cash at authorized processors such as drugstores, supermarkets, lottery agencies and post offices, or via bank transfer.

Once the payment has been received, the merchant ships the purchase. Boleto Bancário also facilitates online payments via bank transfer or payment card.
