According to a survey conducted by the Brazilian Association of Credit Card Companies and Services (Abecs), e-Commerce purchases accounted for 25.1% of all credit card transactions in the first semester of 2014.
As the survey presents, credit cards were the most used payment method in the period, representing 18.8% of all transactions while last year’s rate was 15.6%. Debit cards were responsible for 6.3% against the 3.6% registered in the first semester of 2013.
In total, Brazil registered R$ 455 billion in cards transactions between January and June of 2014, indicating a 16.3% growth. Abecs analysis refers to the World Cup as one of the main reasons for the increase. The event has inflated credit expenditures by foreigners, that totalled R$ 1.3 billion in the period.
Abecs study has also pointed out a significant reduction on cards defaults: only 6.7% of all transactions resulted in a default in June. The entity says this is one of the lowest rates ever recorded.
